Nodjmet: ****Q&A Session on With Sunnyone and TheDude****
Nodjmet: Welcome.
Nodjmet: SunnyOne and TheDude are the two candidates for the next Demi-Pharaoh position, and you can all vote for your favourite at your nearest voting booth
Nodjmet: Now both our candidates will introduce themselves and then begin answering any questions people have for them.
Nodjmet: I'd like to ask SunnyOne to introduce himself first.
Nodjmet: Apology to SunnyOne... she is actually female and not a bloke http://www.atitd.net/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Nodjmet: So she will introduce herself
SunnyOne: Thank you Nodj!
SunnyOne: My name is SunnyOne, well duh, and I live in Kush. I have been playing atitd since about halfway through Tale 1. I was talking to my friends about what I should say to answer this question because I knew it would come up. One of them said that I'm "charming, witty, kind, helpful, sincere". I'll have to remember to pay him for that one. Heehee Another friend said to tell you that I'll "kiss all the good lookin men and shake hands with babies." I'm not so sure I've seen any babies but I do make a habit of asking, whenever I am in a new town, if there's any sculptures or Thoths that need votes.
SunnyOne: A part of who I am includes what I have done. Well, in T1 I was just learning the game most of the time, but I did help to start a mentoring guild and I organized the building of a lesser sphinx. In Tale 2, I was a community leader in Lower Nubia. Some of my accomplishments there were to hold a town meeting to decide the placement of the town's aqueduct pump, to help organize the building of the second Megalopolis in LN, and to organize the building of a lesser sphinx. I also ran LN's Mosaic Museum, and helped manage the LN Thought Park.
SunnyOne: Done
Nodjmet: Thanks for that SunnyOne, and now TheDude will introduce himself (he's definitely a bloke)
TheDude: good morning everyone : )
TheDude: My name is TheDude (I watched the movie 'the big lebowski' the day before i started ATITD, and the name just stuck), and ive been playing ATITD since the first day of Tale1.
TheDude: In tale1 I lived in the fantastic sinai community, and ran a regional trade and research guild called "OWRH". You may also have heard of me from a herb trading guild i ran in tale2 (and has just returned for tale3!) called the DEA. Sometime in the middle of tale2 I took over operations of the community site atitd.net from the (in?)famous Devalin, which is probably where most of you would know me from today.
TheDude: Around the same time i also gathered a huge addiction to chatting in the ATITD irc channel, which im now the head coordinator for. (i spent so much time chatting there i ended up running the place) : ) I look forward to answering your questions, and thanks again jodjmet for holding this chat : )
TheDude: (my apologies, my reponses will speed up as i wake up this morning. i promise) : )
TheDude: nodjmet*
TheDude: done
Nodjmet: I'm now going to open up for questions. Just so you know, the way microphones and channels work is that anything you type into the window ends up on a message board
Nodjmet: As host of this interview I will be picking which questions are asked to keep the interview flowing, to avoid duplication and any questions I think are inappropriate
Nodjmet: If I get too many questions then some of the older ones will disappear off the boards
Nodjmet: So please ask your questions and our candidates will answer the best they can
Nodjmet: Our first questions are arriving... I'm going to ask SunnyOne to go first and when she is done, TheDude will make his reply
kuupid: how do you each feel about community projects?
Nodjmet: (Please have patience folks, it takes a while for our candidates to think about the question and make a long reply)
SunnyOne: Community projects are the heart of ATITD. It's what makes the game fun to me.
SunnyOne: There are many things in the game that a person can do alone, but it is when the community works together, things get accomplished that help everyone out. Right now, I see a lot of effort on research, and that is good. I'm also seeing community efforts to build deep well mines and such.
SunnyOne: I have worked hard for the community. Sometimes, in the forefront, getting people to get stuff done that needs doing. Many times, I'm in the background, encouraging others to take a leadership role. I could go into some of the stuff I have done for my community but I think I already mentioned it so I won't bore you with it again.
SunnyOne: Care must be taken though that we don't get so involved with our community and get so much community pride going that we can't cooperate with the other regions for the good of Egypt. I have seen that happen lots in T2, and I hope we can do better about it this tale.
SunnyOne: Ok, I"m finished. : )
TheDude: Theres few things more fun than a good community project. with the new addition of regional chat, Tale3 has a whole new level of community over previous tellings. a great deal of effort had to be put into building and advertising regional guildhalls, and logistics made allowing everyone who wanted to join almost impossible. Communication is so critical to being able to do amazing things here, ive always tried to do what i can to support all of the communication methods possible
TheDude: today we have a fantastic IRC channel, a wiki, forums, and a brand new Teamspeak voice chat server. I take a great deal of pride in being able to provide the framework for people to be able to keep the community organized and in touch.
TheDude: The more you can do to facilitate that communication, the more community projects happen, and the more fun ATITD gets : )
TheDude: Done
Nodjmet: Next question coming up, and I will ask SunnyOne to go first again
Lill: what do you enjoy most in the game?
SunnyOne: By far, the thing that I have enjoyed the most about this game is the people. I have met some really wonderful people and I look forward to meeting more. For me, the game itself would have gotten boring long ago, if there weren't others around to talk to and work with.
SunnyOne: I have been wandering Egypt lately to find cicadas, get seeds and to acro. I have had a blast. In the regional chats, the people I am meeting are fantastic. The folks in UE last night and 7L the other day, had me laughing so hard. When I went to Karnak, I was asked lots of questions, which make me happy. I love people that are concerned. When I was in CotS, I got asked some even tougher questions. That was fun too because it forced me to really take a look at myself. The projects that we do together for the good of Egypt are good and important but if it weren't for the people I was with, it would be for nothing.
SunnyOne: done
TheDude: My favorite part of the game has always been trading. I sadly am not able to play as many hours a week as i did back in tale1, so i havent been able to run the regional trade store that i was so fond of. But ive been able to get my fix through the DEA. Its partly the math geek in me, and partly being able to provide such a useful tool to the community
TheDude: The DEA is a collaboritive non-profit effort, so it can exist independantly of how many hours i have to play. I really like advertising it, watching its size grow and turn into an extremely useful herb price list, coordinating the tellers. my absolute favorite moments are the same as they always are in trade. Someone can do a 1000 herb trade, and it can be really boring.
TheDude: But when you sell someone that last herb they need for a tuition, or to finally make the guilds endrurance recipe. you can tell it just completely makes their day. I cant get enough of it : )
TheDude: Done
Nodjmet: TheDude is going to answer the next couple of questions first, give SunnyOne a chance to think
Lisimba: How do you feel about banning people from the game? Would you use your powers? And if so, in what circumstances?
TheDude: I care a great deal about this game, and the people who play it. I take the Demi-Pharaoh bans extremely seriously. I do not approach this test by thinking "who should get to ban people?", i see it as "someone MUST take this loaded gun, lets make sure its someone responsible". We have a fantastic legal system here. and a fantastic understanding community.
TheDude: Only in the most extreme cases could bans even be considered. Im told that DP's get quite a few requests for bans, and as you know, that power has been rarely used. People look to DP's to ban in their most desperate times, as a last resort. And it is my intention to do everything possible to avoid having to consider it
TheDude: There are situations where i can see it being necessary. Its so hard to come up with a specific example, because there are SO many qualifications that would have to be met, every scenario i come up with ends up being paragraphs long, and while its *possible* they are often barely plausable.
TheDude: Im not afraid to push the 'red button' if the day ever arose, but im quite sure that if i ever did, i would have the entirety of egypt behind me.
TheDude: Done
SunnyOne: Believe me when I say that I would only use the ban as a very very last resort. I'm not going to tell you that I'll never use it. Stuff happens. I can tell you that I don't ever want to use it. I know it's silly but I would feel like somehow I had failed if I ever had to ban someone. I think that mediation, and lots of it, must come first. A DP must be willing and able to take the time to listen to both sides and try to figure out where each person is coming from and to try to get them to see the other side's point. I know that there are some people out there that only take pleasure from other people's pain, but I think they are very rare. I think more often, the people that get in trouble in here are people, often young people, that don't realize that ATITD has higher social and behavioral norms than most games. Those people need to learn how to get along. They don't need to be banned.
SunnyOne: I think it is interesting that many people say that to ban someone is useless since they can just reroll a character and come back. I'm not going to argue that it can't be done, because we all know it can. But I want to argue that it has never been done. We have never had to ban the same person twice. If they have come back, they have behaved themselves the second time. So, if we look at the ban historically, it has been effective. That doesn't mean that I want to use it. I definitely do NOT want to. I just wanted to tell my thought on that particular argument.
SunnyOne: Done
Nodjmet: TheDude going first again:
Chetty: what do you see as the primary job of a DP?
TheDude: I see DP as more of a title, than a job. a "gold star" of sorts. More than anything a DP has to be ready and willing to deal with the people who look to them for advice. as i said, people often turn to DP's in their most desperate times. and its important to be understanding, and willing to help talk people through their issues, and help other people get involved. a vast vast majority of the time if you can get everyone calmed down and reasonable, there is a middle ground to be reached. and its not an easy job
TheDude: Its also important to use the notoriety of the position to benefit however you can. DP's have a fantastic opportunity to help bring light to others ideas and projects. someone can advertise, for example, a research project. and organize it on their own. If a DP's help or endorsement can make that project get more noticed, and get more support. I would feel obligated to help however i could
TheDude: Done
SunnyOne: The primary job of DP is to mediate and help resolve conflicts. There are many people in this game of many different ages from many different backgrounds. What is right and wrong can be different for different people. That doesn't make one right or wrong over the other but a compromise needs to be found if at all possible. People look to the DP to help with that.
SunnyOne: I also see the DP as someone that many people look up to. I think it is the DP's job to be a good role model, and to be involved in what goes on in Egypt. This may take the form of actively pursuing a particular petition that they feel is important, or by just helping out at a research dig.
SunnyOne: Last, I see it important for the DP to help others develop their skills as leader. There are many good leaders in Egypt that maybe just need a little push to explore and develop that skill. I plan to help those people find that within themselves.
SunnyOne: Done
Nodjmet: I have a few duplicate questions here, and so come to the last new question, if you want to ask the candidates anything different now is your chance
Nodjmet: SunnyOne will answer the next question first:
Trin: we know what you've done for atitd, but what do you intend to do as dp?
SunnyOne: I think the first thing I want to do, as DP is to start a DP guild. This came up in a couple of the DP rounds I was in and I liked the idea. The DPs would be in the guild to support one another, to discuss issues, and to just get to know one another.
SunnyOne: Another of my goals as DP is to pass as many Leadership tests as possible. The ultimate goal of the tale is to build monuments for the different disciplines. I know it's early in the tale but I don't think it's too early to start thinking about this. I plan to continue working on the Leadership discipline. I will attempt to pass every Leadership test. I'll also try most of the tests in the other disciplines as well but Leadership will be my #1 goal this tale.
SunnyOne: And last, as I said before, I intend to be a good role model and help encourage others to develop as leaders. I plan to be a mentor as often as possible. Of course, mentoring I will do whether or not I'm DP. I know that mentoring was taken out of the leadership discipline but I still feel it's the right thing to do.
SunnyOne: Oh, and the mediation stuff. I intend to do that. I just forgot to mention it becuase it is so obviously a part of the job. heehee
SunnyOne: Done
TheDude: DP or not i really enjoy helping out the game, and i would look forward to the opportunity to be someone people can turn to. I also am very much looking forward to the leadership discipline as a whole. In previous tales i spent a significant amount of my time and efforts on the worship and architecture disciplines, and as you know, you eventually have to decide to let some disciplines go to others, and pick your areas of focus.
TheDude: For tale3, i am leaving the architectrure and body disciplines (for the most part) to those as crazy as i i used to be http://www.atitd.net/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif and focus on the thought and leadership disciplines that ive never had the time to focus on. Win or not, you can expect me to be healthy competition to you in all of the other leadership tests, and with a little luck you can expect me to either be the oracle, or standing right behind them next to the leadership monument some day : )
TheDude: Done
Nodjmet: I have some more questions : ) SunnyOne will go first on this one again.
Dreasimy: If you were a Fennec what type of Fennec would you be and why?
SunnyOne: Heehee What a fun question...
SunnyOne: I know what kind I would not be. I would not be sharp-toothed. That's just not me.
SunnyOne: I think I would be a Bushy-Tailed fennec, as in bright eyed and bushy tailed. That sounds happy and inquisitive and that is how I like to be. I love to learn, whether it's a new skill like gem cutting or cooking, or a new outlook from talking to someone I've never met before. I also love to laugh.
SunnyOne: I'm sorry, I"m done
TheDude: lol! I would make a great fennic of /all/ types. Im always wandering all over the place, and easily tracked down by anyone in a 1000coord radius http://www.atitd.net/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif
TheDude: Done
Nodjmet: Another question awaits, TheDude will go first this time.
Mahu: If you could add one new power to the office of DP, what would it be?
TheDude: Hmm... interesting question. DP's already have the greatest power you can give them, they dont need any more http://www.atitd.net/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif But if it were an option, i wish they could periodicly talk to the system channel, or possibly add things to the events calendar. ooh.. actually, what im thinking of is already an award for another leadership test (patronage i believe). Id love the ability to set a temporary waypoint, and send a corresponding system message.
TheDude: That was one of the neatest rewards a test has ever had, and there were dozens and dozens of great projects people did with them
TheDude: Done
SunnyOne: I would add NOTHING to the power of DP. I think that the power to ban is plenty without adding more. Along with the power to ban, there is also the power that comes with being someone that others look to for help and guidance. I think that the DP has plenty enough influence and power as it is, although reading TheDudes answer, I have to agree that his idea is a good one.
SunnyOne: Done
Nodjmet: I'm about to ask the last question from the board, after that I'm going to get TheDude and SunnyOne to ask a question to each other
Nodjmet: The Dude will be answering this one first again.
Krankar: What has been your worst moment in atitd?
TheDude: thats a tough question. The bad experiences ive had have been so outshadowed by the good ones, its hard to pinpoint one down as the "worst". Technicly this was out of game, but i think it would have to be the sudden restructuring of the official IRC channel. Since the day i discovered the chat channel, ive been in there almost every single day getting my ATITD fix while im at work. and over time have grown really fond of the community there, and the fantastic opportunity to keep in touch when i cant get in game.
TheDude: there as an incident where an overzealous new eGenesis PR person got into a squabble with the owners of the IRC network, and upset them to so great of a degree they basicly said "nice knowing you, but we cant continue our relationshp. bye" and I was absolutly devistated. the years of work people (not me) put into buildig and maintaining that community was gone in a second
TheDude: Luckily, we scrambled, found a new home for the channel, and rebuilt the population. The entire operation sort of fell in my lap, and i decided to take a bad situation, and with careful planning, fantastic help, and great policies turn it into an even stronger and more stable community than it was before
TheDude: Ive done everything i can to make sure that that that will NEVER EVER happen again, and also still be a fantastic place to chat. (sorry to advertise here, but however scary IRC sounds, i assure you its a lot of fun! hit the giant CHAT button on ATITD.net and come say hi sometime!)
TheDude: Done
SunnyOne: By far, the worse moments in game for me are when people I love quit. We get to know each other and respect each other and then they are gone. Some, I have been able to keep in touch with, but some I haven't. Of the people that have left, Jodpar leaving has been the absolute toughest. I was crying like a baby when we said our last goodbyes. He was such a big part of my ATITD experience. We had a private chat going since I started in T1, like I'm sure many of you had. He showed me how to be a good mentor, and encouraged me. But many others have come and gone as well. I keep thinking that I'll get used to people leaving, but so far I haven't. Maybe I don't want to.
SunnyOne: Ok, done with that one. Enough sadness.
Nodjmet: Thank you both for your answers so far
Nodjmet: We're getting close to two hours, so I thought we would finish by having you each ask a question of the other to round off this session.
Nodjmet: When you are ready with your questions post them, and then the other person can begin working on an answer.
SunnyOne: TheDude, what would you like to change most in the game?
TheDude: SunnyOne: If you could be any kind of mushroom... (just kidding) http://www.atitd.net/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif How do you see the role of mentorship in tale3, considering the likely late release of an official test?
SunnyOne: LOL @ mushroom
TheDude: Im very fond of a LOT of the changes in tale3. The one that still irks me a little is the levels system, and specificly the principles. Id really like to see the principles for ALL of the tests be much more available to low leveled players. Perhaps i misunderstand their intentions, but it seems like they should all be little tastes of the tests for new players. some of them are very discouraging even to high level players. Pyro and DP are the two sofar that bother me the most. i think there are better ways to help people experience those tests, without being as involved as the principles make them.
TheDude: Done
SunnyOne: I think it is vitally important for everyone to mentor. I don't even mean to pass a test, although it does feel wonderful when you do pass it. This game continues because there are people playing it. And as some people leave, we need new people to come in. The new players are the lifeblood of the game. They bring in new ideas that keep us from becoming stagnant. Every time I see a new player, I ask them if they have someone helping them. SIf they don't, I either help them out or I find someone that can.
SunnyOne: The one problem I see with mentoring new players as a test is that many people then mentor just to pass the test. They don't care about if the new player is adjusting to the game, and that hurts. I haven't come up with a good solution to this yet, but I'm working on it.
SunnyOne: done
Nodjmet: Thank you both for your time and answers, and thank you all for asking questions
Nodjmet: There are threads to put further questions to SunnyOne and TheDude in the test forums at www.atitd.net (http://www.atitd.net/)
Nodjmet: A couple of you have asked extra questions, but we don't have time for them now
TheDude: Thanks very much for taking the time to do these interviews. i always enjoy reading them : )
SunnyOne: Thank you Nodjmet for running the questions.
Nodjmet: Remember you can vote for your preferred choice out of SunnyOne and TheDude at your nearest voting booth!
Nodjmet: As ever an edited transcript will be posted on the forums in due course.
Nodjmet: Good luck both of you : )
SunnyOne: Thank you Nodjmet, and thanks to all of you who listened.
TheDude: Thanks again, and ill keep an eye on the forums and IRC if you have anything else youd like to ask me! : )
Nodjmet: ****End of Session, normal service will resume when there is another board mod, I'm taking a break ***
